There is no longer any doubt that we are in the midst of a climate crisis.

This is not something which we can think about in 10 or 20 years time. Increasingly, your customers and your employees expect you to have a plan and to take action, now.

The Net Zero Restaurants Initiative puts the tools for action on the climate crisis into your hands. It has been specifically designed to help restaurants rise to the challenge with a sector approved standard and an online platform to guide you through the 4-step process.

“We can all set targets individually – as we have for CCEP to reach net zero by 2040 – but to really shift the dial, we need to work together as an industry. The initial pilots have generated some great learnings and insights, helping to shape clear guidelines for restaurants of all sizes to reduce emissions.

With the Net Zero Pubs and Bars protocol’s already helping some of our customers accelerate their carbon reduction journeys, we’re thrilled to be able to support even more of the hospitality sector on the road to zero.”

Julian Hunt, Vice-President, Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability at CCEP GB

"As the world grasps the urgency of the climate crisis, increasing numbers of businesses are seeking guidance on what net zero means for them and how to get there.

We hope the tools provided by the Net Zero Pub initiative will inspire our customers to take action and join the race to Net Zero.”

Ian Peart, Commercial Director at Pernod Ricard UK

What people are saying about the
Net Zero Restaurants initiative

“"Having come through the pandemic, an existential crisis for the restaurant sector for which there was no plan, operators can now go into battle against climate change armed with a set of accessible, affordable and actionable tools. The Net Zero Restaurants Initiative is the best chance restaurants have to take tangible action to serve up meaningful change and enable their customers to use the power of their appetites wisely. We can't wait to start guiding restaurants towards net zero."”

Juliane Caillouette-Noble, Managing Director of the SRA

What is net zero?

In simple terms, Net Zero is about equilibrium.
Applied to businesses, it refers to an organisation in which all Green House Gas emissions...

net zero system_edited.png

... are matched by an equivalent quantity of attributable Green House Gas removals.

This simplistic approach however has created a lot of inconsistencies in the way in which Net Zero is applied.

To promote a consistent approach and to maintain credibility, it is essential that we adhere to four key principles.

Emissions inventory must be calculated in accordance with the GHG protocol and must include all Green House Gasses (GHGs) and all relevant value chain sources over a 12-month period

CALCULATE

Emissions reduction targets are mandatory and must be consistent with ambition criteria of the SBTi and accompanied by credible delivery plans

Carbon credits must be certified to recognized standards and the balance between avoidance and removal must align with the Oxford Principles.

Businesses must share details of their climate plans and action transparently and advocate for widespread adoption of paths to zero.

The way in which these principles apply to licensed premises is documented in the
Net Zero Restaurant Protocol, which is at the heart of the Net Zero Restaurant Initiative

Restaurants ClimatePlaybook Cover (Blank).png

For restaurants that have already calculated their emissions, the Climate Playbook is provided as a resource for exploring emissions reduction activity that could be taken.

As experts in climate strategy, we always recommend that Reduction activity is evidence-based, using insight derived from Calculation.

Without a clear understanding of which parts of your businesses have the greatest climate impact, it is difficult to know where to focus attention or whether action taken has been effective.

The climate action playbook should be used as a complimentary resource for exploring the variety of action you can take.

Please download the guide, or, to join climate action leaders and go net zero, contact us to get started.
